Every decade, the AIA reviews and updates the standard form construction documents that are typically used in the construction industry. The AIA has recently released 11 revised versions of the forms and contracts documents. They anticipate the release of 18 more documents in the fall of 2017.
The AIA’s most helpful publications concerning the new form documents are the “2017 Document Comparisons,” which show a redline comparison of the 2017 document to its corresponding 2007 version. Below is a link to the 2017 documents and the comparisons.
While the AIA’s web page on the subject notes “[o]nce the [fall] 2017 documents are released, the 2007 editions of the documents can continue to be used for up to 18 months,” that simply means that the 2007 versions will only be available online through the AIA for that amount of time. If history is any indication, several sophisticated construction contract professional may use the 2007 forms for years beyond the 18 month expiration, or until they are comfortable with the updated version – – “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.”
